Robins take flight

Well our daily watching of the Robin nest is over. All three babies took off through the day last Sunday. In the morning, they all were very alert and watching Mom and Dad in the yard, flying and hopping around.

11 days old
At one point, the first one was hanging on the outside of the nest. But he/she decided quickly that it wasn't quite time and hopped back inside the crowded nest.  The next time I looked out, there was only 2 babies.

Feeding time -12 days old

Checking things out-13 days old

What are we suppose to do??-Watching Mom and Dad flying( 14days old)

One off-2 to go!
It was fun watching the last two, trying to figure out when the time was right.  Then all of the sudden, number 2 jumped up on the trellis and flew up and then down to the ground.  He went all the way around the neighbors house, hopping, I think.

Number 2 off and running!

Number 3, checking out the wings

Everyone's gone-So Sad
I left for a while and when I came back, Number 3 was gone also.  I spotted her on the retaining wall at the back of the house. Her Mom or Dad was there, telling her what to do.  She flew off to the other side of the creek and a little bit later flew back to the retaining wall.
So, the family of Robins are off flying to the farmlands of Nebraska.
Number 3, Hey, where did everyone go???
We are able to use the deck once again!!!-M

Robin update

?Finch nest with pen
While I was walking the dogs in the back yard Wednesday, I saw a clump of twigs in the bushes. As I looked closer I saw two little eggs on the ground under the bushes.  The clump of twigs was the nest laying sideways. So, I uprighted the nest and placed the eggs in it.  After looking up the eggs on the internet, I think it is a finch nest, but it also could be a wren nest.  Either way I don't think they will come back to it. So Sad. The nest was only a foot above the ground. It is such a cute little nest and eggs.
Robins-3 days old

Robins-4 days old-late in day

blurry feeding time

another blurry feeding time 5days old

Robins-6 days old
Last evening I bet I stood by the sliding glass doors for 30 minutes, trying to get a good shot of the babies feeding.  The only thing I was able to get is the blurry pictures. I guess I zoom out too much and then I can't hold still enough.  Getting shaky in my old age-ha, ha!!  It happens so fast-Momma sits on the nest and when she sees Poppa come with food, she gets up, lets him feed. Then he takes off and back she sits. It is quite entertaining.
We got a lot of rain, along with thunderstorms on Thursday night. I was a little worried about them. But, in the morning all looked well, Momma was in here umbrella position and just a little wet.

Robin Update

Panting ?? 90 degree day

Last week we had temps in the 90's and Lady Robin kept her beak open the whole time.  Do birds pant like dogs, when they are hot????
Raining out, Acting like an umbrella
Then a couple days later, it cooled down and it rained. Lady Robin spread her wings out like an umbrella as she sat on the nest.  Pretty cool, Huh!!?
Mama and Poppa with worm
Last evening when I checked there were 3 eggs in the nest.  Then this morning, we saw Mama and Poppa standing on the edge with a worm.  Mama eventually swallowed it, sat on the nest for a while and then took off. So, we quickly took a peek and saw that 2 eggs had hatched!!  Pretty cool!!

2 have hatched

All three have hatched!!
Then this afternoon, we took another peek while Mama and Poppa were away, and all three have hatched. The one on top had his/her mouth open, right before I took this shot.  Must be hungry already!!
I'll keep you posted-Later-M
